All it needs is a little water, flour, and 5 days to get reactivated.  One scoop of powder (one package) will turn into more than a liter of bubbling active sourdough starter that can last you a lifetime!

She hails from the Central Coast of California ~ just a few hours south of San Francisco. Our starter was created from scratch about 4 years ago using wild yeast cultivated from local organic apples.

What is dehydrated sourdough starter?

With this order, you will receive a packet of dried living organic sourdough starter (1/2 heaping tablespoon, or 7-8 grams) – enough to create an active, bubbly sourdough starter within one week of re-activation. We feed our sourdough starter 100% certified organic ingredients (organic bread flour, organic whole wheat flour, and/or organic all-purpose flour) and filtered water. The starter is dehydrated on a “living foods” (low heat) setting, effectively preserving the beneficial lactic acid bacteria and wild yeast within the starter. It is very much alive – it simply needs to be rehydrated and reactivated!

Once you reactivate your starter, you will have a lifelong supply of sourdough starter culture to use in any delicious homemade sourdough recipe – including rustic sourdough bread, fluffy focaccia, pizza crust, crackers, cornbread, and more!


Once you receive the dry starter:

– You can either reactivate it right away, or choose to wait. It will stay viable in powder form for approximately 6 months as long as it is stored in cool, dry, dark location (such as in an air-tight container in the refrigerator).

– The process of reactivating the dry starter takes about one week (with quick steps each day) and is very easy to do! See the full instructions to reactivate your dry sourdough starter by clicking here.

– To reactivate the dry starter, you will need a medium size glass container (e.g. a pint mason jar), all-purpose flour or bread flour, and filtered water.

    I have always wanted to try making sourdough but, like many, felt entirely overwhelmed by the concept of the starter and the science behind this particular bread. I may be a culinary graduate, but I am in no way a baker by nature. I pushed the idea off until I came across the Homestead & Chill IG which teased me with this idea again and actually made me feel confident (and even more excited) to try it with this starter AND all of her helpful tutorials and stories.

    I really enjoyed the reactivation process and, while I’m still not a natural baker, I’ve made a loaf of sourdough that I was quite proud of! Deanna kindly responded to my PM’s on IG with ALL of my questions and I just don’t know where else someone could find such service. I’ve since gifted discards for friends to have starters and also made some of the most delicious discard crackers! I still bug Deanna from time to time to understand what seems like such a complicated science for my non-baker brain, and she still shows up.

    I will admit, I was a skeptic, but desperate to join the bead baking train, so I bought this starter, because Deanna hasn’t steered me wrong yet!

    I just woke up to day 4 of reactivating my starter, and it is alive and healthy and well! I had to transfer him last night after the second feeding of the day, because he was already outgrowing his pint jar!

    This was my THIRD attempt at sourdough in 2020. I am generally a good baker but I could not get my first starter from scratch going and bought another from Etsy that was a dud. This was so easy and i am officially obsessed. I’ve made the no-knead bread, focaccia, pizza dough and cracker recipes all from H&C. Every one was delicious!

    I *love* this starter!! I am NOT domestic, NOT a baker, and I’m completely useless in the kitchen for the most part. I got this starter, botched day 3 a little (read teaspoons as tablespoons so had to modify flour), but still Ms Gretchen persisted and thrived (and smells amazing). Finally graduating to her permanent home and I did the sourdough herb crackers- I cannot recommend enough! This starter isn’t gluten free, but I used brown rice flour and things worked so well (I have no experience here, but smelled and looked as described so I assume it’s a win). I don’t have celiac so I cannot speak anything but anecdotal evidence but I’m sensitive to gluten and since I used rice flour I’ve had no rumbly tummy. I am so excited to try more recipes! If you’re even the least bit interested, get this. It’s a fun and yummy little experiment and there’s so much info here to keep your sourdough baby thriving!

    We are in love with our starter baby from Deanna! Like most of the world, we started sourdough during the shutdown. Much to my dismay, our roof leaked one day and dripped directly into the cheesecloth covered jar that held it!!! We quit after that, until I saw Deanna’s post about dehydrating hers. Let me tell you, this mildly suspicious looking baggie in the mail brought us a smorgasbord of flavor! I never would have imagined such a small amount could rehydrate to something with such depth of flavor that quickly. There’s no question that Doughlene has a superior complexity to our previous batch and we will keep her going forever!
