Uses for Calendula Salve
Calendula salve works its magic by promoting cell repair and growth, coupled with its natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Apply calendula salve to irritated or dry skin, including on rashes, bites, wounds, stings, acne, scrapes, bruises or swelling, burns (including sunburn), cold sores, chapped lips, cracked cuticles, rough elbows and feet, or dry hands for general moisture. Calendula is known to help ease eczema and psoriasis, and also safely soothe cradle cap and diaper rash. I find it very soothing after shaving, to prevent or treat razor burn. Last but not least, calendula salve can also lessen the appearance of varicose veins and soften scars.

Our Calendula
The calendula used in this recipe is organically homegrown. We harvest whole flower heads daily at their peak freshness (and highest medicinal content) and dry them “low and slow” – on a living foods setting and never exceeding 105’F. Whole dry flower heads are then steeped in high-quality certified organic oils (described below) over several weeks using the solar infusion method. The highest concentration of medicinal resins are found in the green bud of the flower, not only the petals – whole flower is best!
Oils
This salve is created with calendula-infused organic sweet almond and organic sunflower oil. Sweet Almond Oil is a powerful moisturizer for dry and sensitive skin, including baby skin. It works to reduce excess sebum, inflammation, scars, dryness, eczema, and acne. Sweet almond oil can also lighten skin tone, dark circles, and support an even complexion. Sunflower oil is great for both dry, irritated skin or oily, acne-prone skin alike. It is gentle, lightweight, and will not clog pores. It is also highly moisturizing and healing, high in Vitamin E and oleic acid (omega 9 fatty acid) that provide natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It easily absorbs into the skin to lock in moisture, soothe and soften skin.

I absolutely love this product, it has work AMAZINGLY on my dog’s scrapes, scars, rough skin, skin irritations, etc. This is also my favorite for my dry itchy hands. Love this product. I have had such incredible results with my rescue dog’s nose scars, everyone askes what I use. They all get a link to your product. If you would like to see a before and after picture of my dog, the results really are pretty awesome, I’d be happy to share.

Yes this is an absurdly long review but the real reason I finally sat to write my own testimonial starts further down, after a description of my personal use of this product. Along with washing my face with micellar water, this salve has become my only other skincare product for a long while. I’ve struggled with BFRB (body-focused repetitive behavior) for decades and I’ve never come across anything capable of such rapid wound repair. I’m talking…picked skin in the morning and no evidence it’d ever happened by evening of the next day sometimes. I’ve found that the salve even obscures the spot in the way a pimple patch can if the little dollop I’ve placed is smoothed at the edges. But ever since adding the salve to my routine so long ago, I’ve found myself anyways with much fewer of the types of skin imperfections that would trigger my BFRB in times of stress. Eventually this even became the go-to for my children’s bandaides instead of something like neosporin.
Which came in handy after I moved my disabled grandfather into our home to be his primary caregiver. He’s a permanent wheelchair user so pressure ulcers are a serious concern and anyone in the elder care industry knows how true it is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to skin breakdown. When he first moved in, we were depending on outside help from health aides until we could get acclimated to his care and I was devastated when I saw a sacral wound had reached stage 2 before anyone had bothered to say something. I had to push back against that aide who also insisted on random creams from amazon and adhesive bandages that are not appropriate for elderly skin so it felt like two steps forward three steps back on wound care until we parted ways. The pressure ulcer utterly consumed my thoughts. It has taken us nearly six weeks to reach fully intact skin again. I suspect that a couple times the aide who provides showers may have accidentally scrubbed the area rather than blotting, one aide used straight up medical tape that ripped away skin during removal instead of the paper tape I provided, and pivoting seated transfers into the passenger side of his van were causing too much friction until we acquired a slide sheet to help with lateral movement. But after every single setback, I saw measurable progress between each gauze change I did multiple times a day. It’s difficult to convey how awing that experience is. Maybe my industry experience with wound care is too limited or something because I marvel that it’s possible to observe any changes to exposed dermal tissue within mere hours. It is not an overstatement to say that Deanna and Aaron’s salve have been my lifeline during this saga. I’m sure they can’t make claims of medical treatment efficacy for liability reasons so *I’ll do it for them. I’m a forever customer as long as they are willing and able to share the bounty of their flower beds.
*though I urge anyone wanting to use it for the same purpose to do their own proper research on wound care. Avoiding infection is paramount so use individually wrapped sterile dressings or gauze pads and scoop from the salve tin only with a completely fresh and unused glove or else a sanitized reusable item like a boiled spoon. Be very cautious with debridement. Letting a wound “air out” or “breath” is an outdated model so please research moist wound healing environments because what you actually want when you hear “keep it dry” is to prevent the dressings from becoming soiled by outside materials especially related to incontinence. That’s why I love that the salve is oil based. I found that my grandpa’s skin doesn’t respond well to zinc oxide-based moisture barriers, much too drying. I used a LOT of the calendula directly on the exposed tissue and a light layer all around, then coated the area with petroleum jelly to serve as another hydrophobic barrier that the gauze could adhere to without soaking away the salve, meaning that I eventually stopped using the paper tape altogether. More info for those needing support: another facet of this kind of wound management is alternating pressure. He prefers to sleep on his back but some nights we use cushions to support angled side sleeping. We also alternate days with just his powerchair’s attached seat cushion and between two others with different densities placed on top of it.
Good luck and my best wishes to all the other caregivers of our elders, little ones, and everyone in between <3 I’m sure you’re doing a wonderful job and you’ve got this! Tomorrow I’m looking forward to giving a tin from one of my most recent orders to some dear friends who will be new parents soon 🙂
Thank you Deanna and Aaron!

Just about to order more, I don’t like to be without it. I have used on my kids, when they have scraps or whatever pasture raised kids get daily. I have used on my chickens, dogs, cats, even my horse when she had a very large wound that we could not stitch up. Not even a scar on my horse just this calendula salve! Don’t hesitate to have this on hand, it’s truly magical.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The only product I trusted for my newborn baby’s skin! From dry cheeks, cradle cap, & drool rash to just an everyday body moisturizer; we absolutely love this salve!

I bought this for a family member dealing with lot of itchy spots on his body that steroid creams weren’t helping with. He said that it was very soothing to apply and improved his itching (and started healing his skin) very quickly. He asked how I knew what to give him and I said, plants are medicine and these guys know what they’re doing!! I’m working on my own salve, following the directions provided by Homestead and Chill 🙂

This is my go-to product whenever I have wounds that are in the scabby/itchy phase, or my hands need some extra TLC from being washed too frequently.
