Happy Caturday! 🥒 Badger's looking cool as a cucumber, hanging below our @gardeners cucumber trellis last summer. Last year we grew SO many cukes, we ended up donating a lot to our neighbors and local food bank - but not before we enjoyed plenty fresh and preserved ourselves! I especially love making easy refrigerator pickles, tzatziki, and eating fresh slices with a spinkle of salt n pepper. What are your fave ways to use or preserve cukes?❓️

🧅 We prefer to grow onions from seed or nursery

🧅 We prefer to grow onions from seed or nursery seedlings rather than "sets" because they seem to be more successful at growing big, beautiful, healthy onions. Sets are simply immature onion bulbs that have been harvested early, effectively halting their development. That means they don't always pick right up where they left off once they're planted again, and can either grow more slowly, flower prematurely, or fail to form a bulb at all.

So, if you've struggled with growing onions from sets, give seedlings a try! Onions are a wonderful, rewarding, pest-free crop that will feed you for many months to come. We're still eating onions we harvested last September 🙌🏼

‼️ Keep in mind that planting the right variety and type of onion for your latitude is crucial for success too! In general, folks in the northern half of the US should grow "long day" varieties, southern folks should grow "short day types" and areas in the middle can get away with trying both and/or "intermediate day" onion varieties.

🌿 What a DAY! 😮‍💨 Yesterday we broke our personal planting record and planted 101 new native, pollinator-friendly, and/or gopher-resistant plants in the new orchard space. Don't let the smiles fool ya... We're only smiling because after 8 long grueling, back-breaking, knee-crackling hours of work, we were finally DONE 😅💪🏼

I also shared a new article on Homestead and Chill this week with over 50 gopher resistant plants - and turned it into saveable/shareable slides in this post! (See slides 5/6). Many gopher resistant plants are also less attractive to deer, rabbits, voles and other rodents 👍🏼
.
Even though almost every plant we put in this space is technically "gophers resistant", I don't trust those little jerks to 100% leave them alone (our gopher population is *significant*) especially while they're so young, so we used fine mesh "speed baskets" to protect them. The mesh baskets aren't nearly as effective or durable as more sturdy/firm wire gopher cages we usually use, but are SO much easier to work with for large scale planting like this - and will give the plants a moderate level of protection until they grown in and the baskets degrade.
.
And these are just the slope-stabilizing trailing plants! We'll also be adding lots of larger edible + flowering shrubs, ground cover, and mulch to this space over the weeks to come 🌿

Do you practice companion planting yet? 🖐🏼 It is growing two (or more) crops near one another with the theory that they help each other in nutrient uptake, improved pest management and reduced pesticide use, enhanced pollination and higher yields - naturally! It enhances biodiversity and beauty 🌻 #winning

The Native American "three sisters" combo of corn, squash and beans is a prime example. Similarly, we always plant basil and marigolds at the base of our tomatoes. The marigold roots repel root-knot nematodes (a common tomato pest) while the tomatoes provide dappled partial shade that the basil likes to thrive. Supposedly growing basil nearby makes the tomatoes taste better too! 💁🏼‍♀️

🍎 A handful of memorable moments from orchard + native pollinator garden build thus far. It's been a wild, exhausting 6 weeks!

We've weeded, terraced/graded, amended, and partially stablized the slope, and now we're on to the best part: PLANTING 🙌🏼
.
So far we've planted 10 fruit trees (of 13) but are still months away from being finished with this space, with tons of work and finishing touches to come: cover everything in burlap and mulch, add drip irrigation, landscape rocks around the borders, an arched trellis, bench, shrubs, flowers and more...
.
I'm so stoked to see this vision come to life! Thank you for all the love and words of support on this project so far 🥰
