After we finished the new orchard space, I decided I wanted to get some cane berries planted somewhere soon since they take a couple years to really get producing. (And cuz I have zero chill 🤷🏼‍♀️) This empty sunny fencline was the perfect spot!
.
The project came together SO quickly and smoothly thanks to these Birdies raised beds from @epicgardening (thanks Kevin! 💖) I've had my eye on Birdies beds for years, and am stoked to finally have some on our homestead! They're incredibly well-made, durable, long-lasting, and a breeze to put together... (So much faster and lighter than wood 🤪)

To prep the space, we cleared all the weeds, leveled the soil (ahem, gopher mounds and sinkholes) the best we could, laid down hardware cloth as a gopher barrier (extending 1 foot beyond the beds in all directions) and then covered that in a couple layers of natural untreated burlap for weed suppression before putting the beds on top. Then we added wood chips for more weed control and a steel border to finish it all off.

Today, we got final clearance from inspector Badger (even though he said we still need to install a trellis system and drip irrigation). ✅️ I'm so happy with how it tuned out!

💡 Mulch plays a huge role in plant and soil hea

💡 Mulch plays a huge role in plant and soil health! 🪱 It reduces water demand, runoff and evaporation, naturally suppresses weeds, protects and insulates plants from temperature swings/extremes, reduces plant stress by keeping soil more consistently and evenly moist, increases soil fertility and biodiversity, makes your landscape look fresh and sharp, and more. It's one of the most rewarding harden chores! 🤩

Mulch is any material you add to the top of exposed soil to protect it, including wood chips, bark, straw, compost, leaf litter, cardboard, newspaper, pine needles, etc. Even gravel is considered mulch, though you wouldn’t want to add that directly around plants. Each type has its pros and cons! We tend to favor compost and fine shredded bark in our raised beds, with chunkier bark or wood chips in perennial beds. What is your favorite kind of mulch?

The best practice is to apply about 2-4 inches of mulch around exposed soil, but not pile it up directly around plant stems. Especially avoid mulching too heavily right around the base of trees. It shouldn’t touch the trunk itself, so leave a ring clear of mulch of several inches around it.
.
Refresh mulch once or twice per year as needed. We just add more right on top of our beds after spring and fall planting, which also helps cover and protect our drip irrigation lines. In beds where we direct sow seeds, I simply brush aside the mulch where the seeds are going so they can sprout more easily.
.
‼️ When working with big mulch piles, it's best to wear face protection to avoid inhaling the fungal or bacterial spores commonly found it - which can cause very serious respiratory infections and issues!

Hand-diddlin' squash 👋🏻🥒🤓 Do your zucchini ever start to grow, but then go limp, shrivel up, and rot from the blossom end? It just wasn't pollinated, but is an easy fix! Just get in there and give them a hand 😉 FAQ below 👇🏼

👩🏽‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏼 Many squash plants put off only female flowers or only male flowers at the start of the season. Be patient, they'll usually start offering both within a few weeks. This is one reason we always grow several squash plants, to increase our odds.
.
🌞 The best time to hand pollinate is in the morning, since flowers usually open then but close by the afternoon. One time is enough!
.
⏰️ If the right pair of male/female flowers isn't available one day, you can gently peel open spent flowers that have already bloomed to pollinate them later (within a day or two after they first opened).
.
🎨 You can hand pollinate squash with a Qtip, a small paintbrush (my preferred method), or pluck off the male flower and use it directly. I don't do that because the flowers usually open again a second or third time, so I may need to use the male again! Plus, leaving it on the plant means leaving it for the bees 🐝 (and a paintbrush is way more fun).
.
❓️Try to keep it in the family, but if needed, you can use one type of summer squash/zucchini to pollinate another variety (e.g. green zucchini to yellow crookneck). Or, various types of hard winter squash to pollinate eachother (e.g. butternut to spaghetti squash). Yes, cross-pollination will occur so seed-saving will be tricky...but bees cross pollinate nearby squash in nature too👍🏼

Even though California had record-breaking rains this winter, we still had water conservation in mind when creating our new orchard space! We planted fruit trees along with a variety of native and water-wise plants that will attract pollinators and provide habitat for wildlife such as rock rose, yarrow, monkeyflower, CA fuschia and buckwheat, rosemary, lavender, catmint, and more. Keep an eye out for native plants at your local nursery!
.
To help cut costs, we got most of the plants in small 4” pots, and also scattered native wildflower seed with poppies, bluebells, tidytips and more. We also installed a drip irrigation system, which is way more efficient than other types of irrigation. We can easily adjust it depending on the weather, and as the plants mature and require less water.
.
Last but not least, we covered the entire space in several inches of mulch to reduce weeds, runoff, and evaporation. Did you know that using mulch can save up to 30 gallons of water per 1000 sq. ft. each time you water?
.

💧 How to set up the EASIEST raised bed drip irrigation system, connected right to an outdoor faucet! 👇🏼

All you do is screw on a faucet-to-drip adapter, add an optional battery-operated hose timer to automate the system, connect solid 1/2" irrigation tubing to the faucet adapter, run it between your beds and up the sides (with the help of tees and 90° elbow couplers) and then connect rows of 1/4" drip emitter tubing to that. Zero plumbing skills are required - I promise!

I just shared a straightforward step-by-step tutorial on how to create this system on the blog - video included! Even though I'm showing this in our grow bag garden (aka "the calendula farm"), it's perfect for raised beds of all shapes and sizes, or in-ground garden plots.

Don't forget to thin your fruit trees! 🍑🙃 As painful as it may feel, it's best for the tree. Removing a lot of the small fruit (when it's about the size of almond) will make the remaining fruit grow larger, juicer, and overall better quality 👍🏼
.
Thinning also reduces the load and stress on trees and branches, especially small ones that can't bear so much weight!
.
Space apples, peaches and nectarines 5 to 7 inches apart on the branch, plums and pluots 4 to 5 inches, and apricots 3 to 5. (I admittedly keep them a tad crowded at times, but try to thin at least a some! 🙈)
.
🍒 Fruit trees that don't usually need thinning: cherries, figs, mulberries, pomegranates, loquats, citrus, or nut trees.
